How to be a Teaching Assistant
This is an entry level course where you will learn about the role of a teaching assistant. You’ll explore different types of schools and classroom settings. You will also learn how to manage behaviour positively, communicate well, and promote equality and respect.
This course is free if you earn less than £25,750 or are on mean-tested benefits. Proof of eligibility is required.

Level 2 Certificate - Teaching Assistant
If you want to become a teaching assistant or volunteer in schools, this is the course for you. You’ll learn how to support learning in the classroom. You’ll build an awareness of safeguarding children and child development. And you will gain a recognised City and Guilds level 2 qualification.
To complete the course, you will need to undertake at least 100 hours work placement. So, if you are not already employed in a place of learning, you will have to find a voluntary work placement.
This course is free if you earn less than £25,750 or are on mean-tested benefits. Proof of eligibility is required.

Level 3 Diploma - Teaching Assistant
This course is ideal if you are already an experienced teaching assistant or have achieved the level 2 Certificate. It is an accredited course, leading to a level 3 City and Guilds Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools.
It will teach you how to support with effective teaching and learning. Help to plan lessons and review pupil’s progress. Develop your skills in safeguarding children. And learn the professional skills you need to thrive in a place of learning.
To complete the course, you will need to undertake at least 320 hours work placement. So, if you are not already employed in a place of learning, you will have to find a voluntary work placement.

Next available course: Starting in September 2026. Expressions of interest accepted from May 2026.
Course length: 3 hours per week for 34 weeks
