Inclusive Sports Festival 2024: Physical and Learning Disability Sport Taster Event

Join us for Wakefield District's First Disability Sports Event! Promoting inclusivity in sports to neuro-diverse children and their families - and those with learning disabilities.

Saturday, 7 September: 11am - 2pm at Thornes Park Stadium, Horbury Road, Wakefield WF2 8TY.

Sunday, 15 September: 10am - 1pm at Featherstone Sports Complex, Pontefract Road, Featherstone, Pontefract WF7 5AJ.

The unforgettable event will offer many sports taster sessions including:

  • rugby
  • self defence
  • boxing
  • and much more!

September free taster events

There will be free taster events taking place in September where you can try new activities.

Tuesday, 3 September: Featherstone Rovers Learning Disability Rugby League. The event will take place at the Millennium Stadium in Featherstone. It will take place on Tuesdays from 5pm - 6pm.

Open Country will hold Adapted Cycling Sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays. They will be from 6pm - 9pm at Thornes Park. Contact: 07426 716677, Email: wakefield@opencountry.org.uk.

The football sessions are for Non League Yorkshire Community Sport. They are on Thursdays from 5pm - 7pm. Crofton Community Centre hosts them. Contact: info@nlycommunitysport.co.uk.

The Wakefield Whirlwinds Wheelchair Basketball Training Sessions are on Fridays. They are from 6.30pm - 9pm. They are held at Featherstone Sports Complex. Contact: greatorex_s@sky.com.

Saturday, 7 September: Moving Festival – Celebrating Disability Sport, 11am - 2pm at Thornes Park Stadium. Come and try many activities. Learn about sport and physical activity opportunities in the district. Contact: ed.montague@yorkshiresport.org.

Monday, 9 September: This is the schedule for Wakefield Trinity. It's for Learning Disability Rugby League Training Sessions. It's for Mondays from 7pm - 8pm at Ossett Academy. Contact: charliedoherty@wakefieldtrinity.org.

Tuesday, 10 September: Disability Sport Yorkshire runs a Social Prescribing Group. It's on Tuesdays from 1pm - 2pm and Fridays from 10am - 12pm at Denhale Active Recreation Centre. Contact: 01924 372382.

Saturday, 14 September: Thornes Park parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9am. It starts from Thornes Park, by the skate park. Contact: wakefieldthornes@parkrun.com.

Tuesday, 17 September: NLY Community Sport is hosting a Sporting Activities Day for adults. It will be on Tuesdays from 10am - 2pm at Crofton Community Centre. Contact: info@nlycommunitysport.co.uk.

Wednesday, 18 September is National Fitness Day. There is free access to Aspire Facilities across the district for local carers. Contact: aspiremarketing@wakefield.gov.uk.

A1 Football Factory organises specialised football sessions for visually impaired children. They are on Sundays from 10am - 11am at A1 Football Factory, Pontefract. Contact: 01977 525545, Email: team@a1footballfactory.co.uk.

Monday, 30 September: Wakefield Autism Leisure Club meets on Mondays from 6.30pm - 8.30pm. It also meets on Tuesdays from 6pm - 7pm. The club meets at Denhale Active Recreation Centre. Contact: Sally Balmforth, 07415 708007.

Cycling and walking

The adapted bikes at Thornes Park Stadium are available to hire out whenever the facility is open. They can be taken into the park to ride around the path.

St Georges Centre run a weekly Cycling For Fun session on Wednesday at Thornes Park Stadium. This session is for people with mobility and physical impairments. The mobility session is led by a qualified instructor and takes place on the outdoor track throughout the summer months and indoors through winter.

Adapted cycles support people with special needs in a controlled environment. Allowing the opportunity to create independence, creativity, and motivation.

Wednesdays 9.30am – 12pm (drop in whenever suits you) £3.20 a session.

Open Country are a Yorkshire-based charity with over 30 years of experience helping people with disabilities to access and enjoy the countryside. We achieve this through a variety of outdoor activities and the provision of information, training, and advice.
