The verification and Count

At this year’s elections, there are three seats up for election in every ward. The count process is different from elections where there is only one vacancy in the ward.

The videos explain how the verification and count process will work for this year’s elections.

Verification

Before any votes are counted, the number of ballot papers must be checked; this is called ‘verification’. It is a simple count of ballot papers. No votes are checked during this stage.

Counting

In this video you will see how the votes for each candidate are counted. The way votes are counted depends on how the voter has marked their ballot paper. At these elections, people can vote for no more than three candidates.

Results

Once all of the votes have been sorted and counted, a draft result is created. Votes are totalled using spreadsheets. The draft result is checked to see that the number of ballot papers recorded during the count matches the number of ballot papers that were verified. A result is only declared when the Returning Officer is happy that it is accurate.
