Who is the AFC?
Councillor Wayne Beddoes is proud to serve as the Armed Forces Champion for the Wakefield district.
He has over 35 years of military experience across the infantry and combat engineers. As well as a Councillor, he is currently an Army Reservist and full-time tutor.
Who is the Deputy AFC?
Councillor Ian Fletcher is proud to serve as the Deputy Armed Forces Champion.
He is a veteran of the Coldstream Guards.
What do the AFC and Deputy AFC do?
The AFC and Deputy AFC use their military experience and strong community values to support the Armed Forces community.
They are passionate about championing the Armed Forces Covenant. They help ensure that serving personnel, veterans, and their families, are treated fairly. Without disadvantage. And that they receive the recognition, support and opportunities they deserve.
The AFC and Deputy AFC strengthen links between the military and civilian communities. They support residents and help drive positive, community-led change across the district.

Armed Forces Covenant Officer (AFCO)
Who is the AFCO?
Julie Dawes is the Armed Forces Covenant Officer for the Wakefield District.
What does the AFCO do?
The AFCO makes sure that Wakefield Council complies with the Armed Forces Covenant, across all areas of policy making.
They raise awareness of the Armed Forces community and their needs, including:
serving personnel (regular and reserve)
their families
veterans
cadets
They also work with the Regional Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA) (RFCA) to connect with key local businesses, to promote.
