Councillor Maureen Tennant-King and Mr Terry King

Councillor Maureen Tennant-King and Mr Terry King

Maureen was born at Castleford Maternity Home and has lived in Featherstone all her life. She was educated at North Featherstone Secondary Modern School where she passed her CSE’s and went on to study shorthand, typing, bookkeeping and office practice at Whitwood Mining and Technical College.

Maureen first started working for social services before working within a school whilst her own children were in education. In 1993 Maureen went back to work for social services working in a training centre supporting adults with learning disabilities, before moving into the private sector in residential homes and domiciliary care throughout the Wakefield and Barnsley areas. For many years she was an Assistant Girl Guide Leader in Featherstone and enjoyed taking the youngsters on holidays and camping trips.

She became a Town Councillor for Featherstone in 1999 and has been its Town Mayor on three occasions. She became a District Councillor in 2016 representing the Featherstone ward. Since becoming a District Councillor Maureen has served on many committees and currently sits on the Children’s and Young People’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee and is Deputy Chair of the Planning and Highways Committee.

Maureen is a Trustee for the Featherstone Rovers Foundation, Trustee and Chairperson of Featherstone Urban Charities Board, Trustee and Wakefield Council’s representative on Wakefield District Sight Aid and has recently been appointed Patron of the Well Women’s Centre.

Maureen will be joined by her husband Terry as Consort. They married in September 2000 and have an extended blended family and many grandchildren.

Terry was born in Pontefract and grew up in Ferrybridge. He was educated at Pontefract Boys School and on leaving school he went to work at the Glassworks in Knottingley before joining the Royal Navy at aged 17. After 9 years’ service he left the Navy and came back to live in Knottingley for a while before moving to Streethouse and then Featherstone. During this time he went back to working in the Glassworks where he became Shift Manager. On leaving the Glassworks Terry worked in the care sector before retiring a few years ago.

In their spare time Maureen and Terry enjoy spending time at their static caravan and follow and support Featherstone Rovers at both home and away matches. When Terry is unavailable to support Maureen, she will be joined by family, friends and members of the local community.

Maureen and Terry are looking forward to meeting the many hard-working groups and organisations across the District and beyond. They are both very proud to take up the position of Mayor and Consort, representing the District at a variety of engagements during the coming year.

Maureen and Terry would also like to congratulate the retiring Mayor and Consort, Councillor Darren Byford and Mr Peter Davis on their successful year in office. They have both enjoyed working with Darren and Peter and are looking forward to an equally enjoyable working relationship with the Deputy Mayor and Consort, Councillor Lynn Masterman and her husband Lee.
