Report a dangerous dog

It is an offence to allow any dog to be dangerous or out of control in a public or private place.

If your dog is dangerously out of control, you can be fined, be sent to prison (or both).

You can report a dog that’s out of control. It could help protect you and your community.

What is a dangerous dog?

A dog is considered to be dangerously out of control if:

  • it has injured someone
  • it makes someone frightened for their own safety
  • it has attacked another animal
  • it is roaming around and is being aggressive towards people or other animals

How to report a dangerous dog

You can report a dangerous or out of control dog using our online form. You will need to tell us:

  • the exact location of the dangerous dog
  • a description of the dog (such as its breed, size, colour, age etc.)
  • what has happened
  • if you have told the Police and what your log number is, if you have one

If you suspect that the dog is a banned breed, you should ring the police on 101. Banned breeds in England are:

  • XL Bully 
  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro

Our dog wardens work Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm (excluding Bank Holidays). If you want to report a dangerous dog outside of these times, you should ring the police on 101.
