Keeping your dog safe

A small dog being microchipped

It is important to do all you can to keep your precious pet safe.

If your dog gets lost or stolen, a microchip and tag mean it can be easily identified and there is a greater likelihood of you being reunited.

Microchipping

All dogs must be microchipped by the time they’re eight weeks old. If your dog is scanned and does not have a microchip, you could be fined up to £500.

You can get your dog microchipped at a vets. If you are on a low income, your local branch of the RSPCA may be able to help you microchip your dog for free.

Registration

All dogs must also be registered by the time they’re eight weeks old.

The microchip contains a number, which is used to register your dog.

There are several approved registers. You can find a list of these on Get your dog or cat microchipped.

If you’re unsure which register your dog is on, you can check this on Check a Chip.

It is important to keep your contact details up to date on the register. You could be fined if you fail to update these.

Collar and tag

Your dog must wear a collar and tag with your name and address when out in a public place. Even if it's microchipped. It’s also a good idea to add your phone number.

Check your dog’s collar and tag regularly for signs of wear and tear. And don’t forget to update the details if you move house.
