Wakefield recycling centres to extend opening hours

Wednesday, April 22, 2026

Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) across the Wakefield district will be open for longer from now until 25 October 2026. Helping people make the most of the lighter evenings and busier household routines during spring and summer.

There are three Household Waste Recycling Centres in the Wakefield district. South Kirkby, Wakefield and Glasshoughton.

Summer opening hours at the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) are:

·       Mondays to Friday: 8:00am - 5:00pm

·       Saturday: 8:00am - 4:00pm*

·       Sunday: 9:00am - 4:00pm*

*Queues may be cut off early to ensure a 4:00pm close.

The council have also confirmed late night summer opening hours at each of the sites. Household Waste Recycling Centres will be open until 8pm on the following days:

·       South Kirkby - Monday (including Bank Holidays)

·       Wakefield - Tuesday

·       Glasshoughton - Thursday

To make visits quicker and support effective recycling, everyone is encouraged to separate their waste at home before travelling to the site. For safety reasons, visitors are advised to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Sandals and flip‑flops are not suitable on site.

Residents can bring a wide range of items to the HWRCs, including electricals, batteries and vapes, wood, garden waste, textiles, furniture and a limited amount of brick and rubble. For the full list of what is accepted, visit: http://www.wakefield.gov.uk/.../household-waste-recycling...

All three HWRC’s have a reuse container where good quality items such as furniture, bikes and bric-a-brac can be placed, preventing them from becoming waste and protecting the planet giving old items new life.
