Wakefield libraries recognised as a welcoming place for everyone
Monday, January 27, 2025
Our libraries provide a welcoming safe space, support and opportunities for everyone, including those fleeing war and persecution.
They have recently been re-accredited as ‘Libraries of Sanctuary’.
This was achieved through staff training and involvement, ensuring there was a thorough understanding of issues people can face. As well as talking with and listening to our communities and demonstrating future commitment.
“We are committed to supporting the most vulnerable and those in need in whatever way we can.
“It’s wonderful that our libraries have been recognised in this way once again and that they are providing a safe and welcoming environment for everyone in our district.”
Cllr Hannah Appleyard
Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport

Anyone can become a member of our libraries; we are fine free and no ID is required to join.
We offer free access to books, newspapers/periodicals, databases, and resources both physical and online. As well as computers, free internet access and Wi-Fi, events and activities and free warm, welcoming spaces.
Our libraries also act as venues for events to engage the local community, such as food tasting, crafts, health walks, mindfulness sessions and traditional ethnic entertainments.
We work together with Wakefield City of Sanctuary and other partners to ensure library staff remain informed of community issues. This ensures our customer service is delivered with compassion and sensitivity, and our facilities and events reflect the needs of our community.
