Wakefield District to hold its first "Festival of Learning"

Tuesday, February 25, 2025

Wakefield residents invited to the district’s first ever Festival of Learning from 3 to 8 March.

The events will help people access training and employment opportunities to support their career and lifestyle aspirations.

“These events will highlight the value of gaining new skills, whatever your age. It’s never too late to learn something new. Maybe you want to get into work, or you’re already employed and you're aiming for a promotion. These events include guest speakers who are experts in these areas. You can access advice and tips on everything from how to be more confident in an interview to understanding nutrition and living healthier lives.

“The festival of learning is part of our pledge to provide lifelong learning opportunities for all our residents. I would encourage anyone who wants to improve their career prospects, learn a new skill or access training to choose the event best suited to them. No matter what your age or background.”

Employers and service providers from across the district are coming together to provide a variety of events. A whole range of industries will be represented, from social care to creative careers. Offering advice on how to obtain skills required for the jobs of the future – including the digital arena and working in sustainable energy, technology and environmental sectors.

The Council is also funding a series of workshops at major employers and schools in the district. Events include opportunities for people who may not have English as their first language to find out more about the learning and development opportunities available to them.

“Lifelong learning isn’t only about improving job prospects or increasing your household income. It’s helping people live more healthy, independent lives. Whether that’s managing your own finances or learning new digital skills.”

The events coincide with National Careers Week. They are free to attend and have been arranged at no cost to residents. Funding has been provided by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

Wakefield is a recognised UNESCO Global Learning City, and champions lifelong learning and its vital role in strengthening communities, upskilling the local workforce and contributing to a strong local economy.
