Wakefield Council is helping residents to Get Online

Monday, October 19, 2026

Wakefield Council is encouraging residents to discover the benefits of being online with a programme of free digital inclusion activities during Get Online Week 2026.

“We want to help make sure that all our residents are digitally included.

“A lack of device access, internet access, a lack of digital literacy, or other barriers can isolate people from lots of different opportunities.

“By running these events, we’re aiming to improve digital access for people of all backgrounds and ages. Helping people contribute to our local economy and access important public services.”

Cabinet Member for Resources and Property

Taking place from 19 to 25 October 2026, the national campaign highlights the importance of digital access, skills, confidence and online safety.

Throughout the week, the Council and partners will deliver a range of activities designed to help more people get online and make the most of digital technology in a way that works for them.

Being online can open opportunities to access services, search and apply for jobs, manage finances, learn new skills, stay connected with friends and family, and improve health and wellbeing. However, many people continue to face barriers such as a lack of access to devices, internet connectivity, digital skills or confidence.

Activities taking place across the district during Get Online Week include:

  • Research Your Family History Online – Monday 19 October 2026, 9.30am-5pm at Wakefield Library – discover your family with our free Family History Sessions, where you can learn how to explore your ancestors using Ancestry and Findmypast, with friendly support to help you uncover your family story online.

  • Digital Drop In - Tuesday 20 October 2026, 2-3pm at South Elmsall Library - join us for a free Digital Help Session, where you can improve your digital skills, get friendly one-to-one support, and collect a free AI Information Pack to help you make the most of artificial intelligence.

  • Explore Pontefract’s Hidden Hermitage – Wednesday 21 October 2026, 10am-12pm at Pontefract Library – step into the past with our VR experience, 'Explore Pontefract’s Hidden Hermitage', and use virtual reality technology to discover one of Pontefract’s most fascinating historic sites in an immersive new way.

  • Code Club - Thursday 22 October 2026, 4-5pm at Normanton Library - children can have fun learning coding skills, creating digital projects, and exploring technology in a friendly and supportive environment.

The week forms part of Wakefield's wider commitment to creating a more digitally inclusive district, recognising that digital inclusion is about more than just technology. It is about ensuring people have the access, skills, confidence and support they need to participate fully in modern life.
