Wakefield celebrates Volunteer Week 2025 with Citizen Coin
Monday, June 02, 2025
Wakefield Council is celebrating Volunteer Week 2025 (2 – 8 June) by recognising and rewarding the district’s dedicated volunteers through Citizen Coin.
Citizen Coin, which launched in 2024, has already provided hundreds of rewards to volunteers across the district, helping to foster a stronger community spirit. As part of this year’s Volunteer Week 2025 celebrations, participating businesses are encouraging more people to give back by showcasing the benefits of volunteering.
“Our volunteers are the heart of Wakefield, making a real difference in people’s lives every day. Through Citizen Coin, we have a fantastic opportunity to give back to those who give so much. I encourage everyone - whether you’re a volunteer, a local business, or a community group - to take part in Volunteer Week 2025 and show appreciation for our community champions.”
Cllr Daniel Wilton
Cabinet Member for Communities

Throughout the week, volunteers will be able to earn Citizen Coins with Wakefield based organisations and groups and redeem them for discounts at participating businesses. While local retailers and organisations are invited to offer special promotions in recognition of their contributions. The week will also feature inspiring volunteer stories, exclusive events, and opportunities for new volunteers to get involved.
Among the local businesses and organisations supporting the scheme are Diggerland and Theatre Royal Wakefield, both of which have been offering exciting rewards to Citizen Coin users.
Castleford-based Diggerland, has been delighted to support Citizen Coin and Volunteer Week 2025. Sherene Garvin-Mack from Diggerland said: “At Diggerland, we’re incredibly proud to support Citizen Coin and celebrate the hardworking volunteers who give so much to their communities. As a company committed to sustainability, from powering our parks with solar energy to reducing waste and planting trees, we know that small actions can make a big difference. That’s why we’re thrilled to reward volunteers with fun, unforgettable experiences, as a thank you for the positive impact they make every day.”
Paul Mellin from Theatre Royal Wakefield added: “We are incredibly grateful for the volunteers who contribute to our local community. Citizen Coin is an excellent initiative that not only rewards volunteers, with over 500 being rewarded to our volunteers since we joined the scheme in September but also raises awareness of the impact they have. Volunteer Week 2025 is the perfect opportunity to celebrate their hard work and encourage even more people to get involved.”
