Thursday, February 13, 2025

Wakefield Adult and Community Education Service has received an overall ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted, with ‘Outstanding’ Leadership and Management.

Ofsted found that the service “significantly improves the life chances and employment prospects of adults in the local community.”

“I’m really proud of our Adult Education service, and welcome this fantastic result from Ofsted. It’s a testament to the great service that our team provides to learners across the district.

The difference that this service is making to so many people’s lives, really is evident from the report. I would encourage anyone looking to advance their career or learn a new skill to get in touch and see how we can help you to achieve your goals.”

Following an inspection last month, Ofsted has recognised the positive way in which the service supports learners with their personal development. Rating both personal development and the behaviour and attitudes of learners and staff as ‘Outstanding.’

The report also notes that learners receive a good quality of education, with good adult learning programmes.

The report commended the “nurturing and inclusive environment” provided to learners. And the tutors, who “provide highly effective support to learners which often transforms their lives.”

The Council’s service is now working on suggested improvements, including empowering learners to act on feedback received from teachers.

“We know there will always be more we can do to keep improving our excellent service and we’re already taking action on the recommendations.”

Wakefield’s Adult Education Service provides a range of face-to-face and online courses to adults aged 19 and above. Including Maths, English, and English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL). As well as creative, employability, and career-led courses. Learners receive comprehensive support, including activities and workshops to support their courses and future careers.

Courses are open to adults aged 19 and over. And with Wakefield Adult Education, learners benefit from smaller class sizes and supportive, mature learning environments.

Most courses are free, and residents who are unemployed and seeking work, or earning less than £25,000 per year, are entitled to a fully funded course where fees are charged. Some people can also get help with travel costs, equipment and/or childcare.
