Step Up adding social value to the Wakefield district

Tuesday, May 06, 2025

The Council’s Step-Up programme has been recognised for the significant value it provides to residents.

Step-Up provides tailored skills and career coaching to residents. It was shortlisted for a national Employment Related Services Association Award. The Council was the only local authority included in the category. It recognises the actions taken by organisations to improve the world around them.

In the two years to 31 March 2023, the social value of the Step-Up programme was valued at £39.4million. That means for every £1 invested in Step-Up, there was a return of £7.38. This was measured using the UK Government, Cabinet Office sponsored guide to Social Return on Investment (Social Value UK, 2009).

Step-Up’s social value comes from helping people get into or return to work. Improving the financial stability of residents in the district, and their confidence and resilience. While reducing isolation and anxiety.

Charlotte Brooke, aged 23, is one of Step-Up’s many success stories. She received support to get a job and said: “I’d just finished a six-month temporary contract and found myself out of work. In the past, I’ve struggled to get jobs because I’ve been quite nervous and unconfident. Then I found Wakefield Council’s Step-Up programme.

“My work coach helped me work on interview techniques, body language and making sure my CV was up to date. Showcasing my skills in the best way possible. My work coach also helped me look for different things to apply for.

“I had my interview and then got a call saying I’d got the job. The Step-Up service helped with my confidence. If it wasn’t for Step-Up, I’d probably still be unemployed and worried about the future. I’d recommend anyone who needs support to get a job to get in touch with Step-Up.”

By getting people into work and off benefits, it supports the economy. And increases the money coming in through income tax and National Insurance contributions.

Step-Up aims to leave no resident behind. It’s open to all Wakefield district residents, regardless of whether they have a job, how old they are or where in the district they live.
