Share your thoughts on new planning guidelines for the Wakefield district
Wednesday, November 19, 2025
Wakefield Council is asking residents to share their views on a new document that sets out guidelines for future developments requiring planning permission.
“We want to improve the quality of new buildings and places across the district. This new document provides guidance that will help people have high-quality designs right from the start. Whether that’s residents requesting planning permission to add an extension to their home or developers seeking permission for large scale projects.
“We really want to hear what residents and businesses think of the new guidelines, so we have made it easy for people to share their thoughts with us via our website.”
Cllr Matthew Morley
Cabinet Member for Planning and Highways
Wakefield Council has been chosen as a Design Code Pathfinder through a programme run by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). This has helped create the new design code.
Residents will be able to share their thoughts from 20 November - 14 January 2026.
The new document can be viewed, and comments made online at Planning Policy and Environment Consultations - Wakefield Council
For residents unable to view online, information will be available at the Customer Access Point, Wakefield One, Burton Street, Wakefield. Please check opening times before visiting.
A drop-in session where officers will be available to answer any questions will be held on Friday 28 November 2025 from 2.00pm until 5.00pm in the Old Court Room, Wakefield Town Hall, Wood Street, Wakefield, WF1 2HQ.
Comments submitted will help inform the final version of the new Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), which is expected to be considered for adoption by the Council in summer 2026.
