New SEND Unit at Moorthorpe Primary School
Monday, December 15, 2025
Moorthorpe Primary School’s new SEN Unit is now open, offering specialist support for children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
The unit provides up to 14 dedicated places and builds on the school’s existing resource for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This expansion means more children can access personalised education close to home, helping them thrive in an inclusive environment.
“We are committed to ensuring every child has access to the right support close to home. This new unit means children with SEND can thrive in an inclusive environment while staying connected to their local community.”
Cllr Margaret Isherwood
Cabinet Member for Children and Young People
The new SEND Unit builds on the success of Moorthorpe Primary School’s established integrated resource for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This existing provision has already shown how inclusive approaches can transform lives. Children spend up to 90% of their time in mainstream classes, accessing the same curriculum and spaces as their peers. Outcomes go beyond academic progress; pupils are building confidence, improving social skills, and strengthening family life. One pupil who initially struggled to attend classes now feels confident enough to join family events, including a wedding and holiday.
By adding a dedicated SEND Unit, the school can now offer even more tailored support, ensuring children thrive in an inclusive environment close to home. The new unit offers a highly tailored approach with a staff-to-pupil ratio of 1:2. Each child has an individual plan, and learning is delivered in a flexible way. Activities are designed to build communication skills, confidence, and social interaction, while supporting each child’s unique needs. Staff work closely with speech and language therapists and occupational therapists. Parents receive regular updates on goals and progress, on a new interactive app, building real trust and creating a strong two-way relationship.
The opening follows a successful statutory process and consultation earlier this year. It reflects Wakefield Council’s commitment to meeting its statutory duties under the Education Act and SEND Code of Practice, while delivering on the Corporate Plan priority of Thriving Children and Families.
