More EV charging points coming to Wakefield as part of our plans to go green

Tuesday, October 08, 2024

More electric vehicle charging points will be installed across the district if Wakefield Council’s key decision makers give the go ahead at their meeting next week.

Cabinet are being asked to accept a grant of £1,520,938 from the West Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority’s (WYMCA) Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) grant funding scheme.

“The number of electric vehicles on our roads continues to grow as people opt to make the switch to greener vehicles. We need to make sure there are enough publicly available charging points across our district to meet this need.

“More people will make the switch to electric if they are confident they will be able to charge their car easily. We need to provide affordable charging for households without driveways and accessible charge points to allow everyone to access public EV charging. That’s why this grant funding is so important.”

In the last year, there has been an 18% increase in the purchase of electric vehicles nationally.

The decarbonisation of the transport sector is an important part of the West Yorkshire region’s target to be net zero by 2038. In addition, the switch to zero emission vehicles will improve air quality and as a result, people’s health.

The LEVI fund supports local authorities in England to install public charge points for residents without access to private parking, and to improve the roll out and commercialisation of local charging infrastructure.

Cabinet will meet on Tuesday 15 October at 10.30am. The meeting can be watched live or later on the Council’s website.
