Light Up Wakefield is back this November

Tuesday, October 15, 2024

Wakefield Council is excited to announce that Light Up Wakefield is back from 15-17 November.

This year’s event is sponsored by YPO who celebrate their 50th Anniversary year as a major employer in the city.

“Expect a festival which is bigger and better than ever before as this year’s event is part of Our Year - Wakefield District 2024.

“We’re really looking forward to kicking off the festive season and spreading a little bit of Christmas cheer.

“There are lots of events and activities taking place right across the city centre, and there really is something for everyone to enjoy.”

Simon Hill, Managing Director of YPO, said: “This year we are celebrating our 50th year as a major employer and public sector organisation in the city. As part of our commitment to social value and the local community we’re excited to be shining a light on Wakefield through our sponsorship of Light Up Wakefield.”

Light Up Wakefield will delight visitors with three days of light installations, craft activities, a Christmas Craft & Gift Market, tipi bar, street entertainment and more spread across Wakefield city centre.

The Light Up trail will feature one-of-a-kind installations that celebrate the great variety of heritage, culture and arts across the district. Including The Timekeepers by Illuminos - a unique piece giving visitors an immersive experience with projection mapping onto County Hall.

Other installations include Båll & Brand’s The Ice is Melting at the Pøules II which brings to the fore big questions around issues like global warming. And Sentinel by Studio Vertigo is a large-scale artwork with sweeping curves inspired by the wings of a canary.

Make sure to stop by The Art House for Zarah Hussain: Paradise Carpet which explores heritage, spirituality, geometry, technology, and contemporary art.

And don’t miss an awe-inspiring animation projected across The Hepworth Wakefield to celebrate 100 years of Surrealism.

There will be plenty of drop-in activities for families to take part in across the weekend including colour-pop lantern workshops sponsored by YPO. Join artists Helen Thomas and Tony Wade to make your own hand-held lantern, on the themes of celebration, light and Wakefield.
