Let’s make this Stoptober another step toward a Smokefree Wakefield
Tuesday, September 24, 2024
Wakefield Council is supporting Stoptober to encourage people to give up smoking for good.
"By taking part in Stoptober, you are joining millions of quitters experiencing the benefits of a smoke-free life.”
Cllr Michelle Collins
Cabinet Member for Adults and Health
During October, people are invited to take steps to give up smoking. People who quit for 28 days are five times more likely to stop smoking for life. They can receive advice and support to reach their goal through the Yorkshire Smokefree service.
Wakefield Council's overall vision is to make smoking and vaping invisible to children, so that they become a smoke-free generation.
A successful pilot at Smawthorne Primary School in Castleford put smoking education onto the curriculum.
Cllr Collins added: “I am pleased with the Proud to be Smokefree pilot at Smawthorne Primary School, which has seen children learn about the dangers of smoking.
"We hope that adults understand the impact smoking has on children and how we can create a healthier district with their support. By taking the first step this October, we can work together to create a district where the next generation is protected from the harms of smoking. "
Proud to be Smokefree will continue to extend into places where children learn and play, such as schools and rugby clubs.
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable ill health in Wakefield, contributing to 1 in 5 deaths.
Stoptober offers smokers an opportunity to break free from smoking. Quitting has many benefits including improvements to breathing, increased mobility, and saving money.
