Landlords reminded of deadline to inform tenants about new Renters Rights Act 2025

Wednesday, May 20, 2026

On 1 May 2026, the Renters Rights Act 2025 came into force.  This gives new rights to tenants in the private rented sector.  It has also introduced new rules that private landlords must follow.

To help tenants understand the changes, the Government has prepared The Renters Rights Act Information Sheet 2026.

Landlords must send this exact document out to their tenants by 31 May 2026.  They must:

•    provide a printed hard copy

or

•    send it electronically as a PDF attachment to a text message or email (links are not acceptable).

Landlords who use letting agents should make sure that their agent has also issued the Information Sheet to their tenants, even if they have provided it themselves.

Landlords face fines of up to £7,000 if they do not give the Information Sheet to their tenants by 31 May 2026.  Further information is available on the Government’s website.

The key changes to Renters Rights include:

•    Tenancies no longer have a fixed term or set end date. They now operate on a rolling monthly or weekly basis, depending on your agreement.
•    Landlords must have a legal reason to evict tenants.
•    Landlords can only increase rent fees once a year.

More of the changes are on our Renters Rights Act web page, along with links to additional guidance.
