How citizen coin helped one resident rediscover swimming

Tuesday, May 13, 2025

Citizen Coin, a key initiative within Wakefield’s Healthy Places and Communities programme, is making a tangible difference in residents’ lives by rewarding volunteering with digital tokens that can be redeemed for local services and activities.

For one Wakefield resident, Citizen Coin has been nothing short of life changing. Facing financial difficulties due to the rising cost of living, Sarah was unable to afford swimming for two years - a passion that once played a crucial role in her physical and mental well-being.

With the introduction of Citizen Coin, Sarah discovered that earned coins could be redeemed for swimming sessions, allowing her to return to the activity she loves. “The coins are amazing! As you can claim the same offer multiple times, I have been using them for swimming. Due to the cost of living, I had not been able to swim for two years, but Citizen Coin has given me the opportunity to do something I love again, improving both my physical and mental health.”

Beyond the personal benefit, Sarah has become a passionate advocate for Citizen Coin, sharing their positive experience with others and encouraging more people to sign up. “At every opportunity, I talk about Citizen Coin. I know a few people who have since joined - it’s a great way of giving back to the people supporting the community.”

Citizen Coin’s success in enabling residents to engage in activities that improve well-being, while fostering a culture of giving back, highlights its vital role in the community. As the programme continues to grow, feedback from users like this will help shape its future, ensuring even more people can benefit from the initiative.
