Former Councillor Graham Isherwood has been posthumously awarded Wakefield’s first Honorary Alderman title.
The award was presented to Graham’s wife, Cllr Margaret Isherwood, who is currently a serving councillor, by the Mayor of Wakefield.
“It was a great honour to bestow the first ever Honorary Alderman title on Graham Isherwood. It is one of the Council's highest awards and extra special that this is the first one we have ever awarded."
Cllr Darren Byford
Mayor of Wakefield

Graham Isherwood, who died in October last year, was one of Wakefield’s longest serving Councillors. The title has been awarded in recognition and acknowledgement of his distinguished service to the Council and the district.
“We are extremely proud to honour Graham with Wakefield’s first Honorary Alderman title. It is only fitting that it goes to someone so special.
“Graham served this Council from 1987 until last year. In that time, he did so much important work, not only for his beloved Featherstone, but the whole district.
“He was a great asset to the Council. And also, a dear friend who mentored and supported me over many years. He will be dearly missed.”
Cllr Denise Jeffery
Leader of Wakefield Council

Under the Local Government Act 1972, the Council can award the title of Honorary Alderman to those who have provided outstanding services as past councillors.
Graham Isherwood was first elected in 1987 and chaired the authority’s corporate and resources overview and scrutiny committee.
He also served on Featherstone Town Council for 35 years and was the town’s mayor during the millennium year in 2000.
