District Plan launched to deliver a stronger Wakefield

Monday, September 29, 2025

The Wakefield Together Partnership has launched the Wakefield District Plan 2025 – 2035.

The plan has been produced through joint-working between hundreds of local partners, including Wakefield Council. It focuses on delivering better outcomes for residents and businesses over the next decade.

“This is a landmark day in delivering on the amazing potential of our district. Wakefield has an incredibly bright future, and this is a key milestone on that journey.

“The District Plan is the product of intensive work from across our partnership. There’s been a strong commitment to building a shared ambition which will capitalise on our strengths and make a real difference for our communities.

“I’d like to thank all of the local public, private and voluntary organisations who have contributed to the process. By working in partnership, we’re coming together to build a stronger Wakefield.”

The Wakefield Together Partnership have engaged with over 270 organisations, community groups, and businesses to develop the plan. And it is based on feedback from the experiences of people who use public services every day.

Mel Brown, Accountable Officer at Wakefield District Health and Care Partnership, said: “It is exciting to see our collective commitment come together to drive forward action to tackle the determinants of health as part of Wakefield’s District Plan.

“The strong focus on achieving better and healthier lives for local people runs right throughout our plan. Our health sector is looking forward to playing a vital role in building our future.”

Chris Bann, Chair at Nova Wakefield District, said: “Voluntary and statutory organisations throughout the Wakefield district have come together in partnership to shape the Wakefield District Plan. By working collaboratively, we are combining our strengths and resources to create a shared vision that puts our communities and people at the heart of everything we do.”

Martin Hathaway, Chair of Policy at Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Our district is already home to innovative businesses and a committed skilled and creative workforce. We know we can add to these strengths by building diversity and resilience into our economy.

“The Wakefield District Plan is a real opportunity to ambitiously grow our economy and capitalise on our strengths, building future prosperity for the businesses and residents of our city, towns and villages.”

By 2035, the Wakefield district will be a place where opportunity is equal, everyone feels valued, and every resident has the chance to thrive - a district everyone is proud to call home.

There are 22 outcomes from the plan including reducing climate change, thriving, welcoming and safe communities and a place for children and young people to grow and thrive. As well as helping people to live healthy lives, an economy that works for everyone and strong local services.
