Citizen Coin

We are celebrating and rewarding volunteers across the district with Citizen Coin.

The Citizen Coin app encourages people to get involved in their communities by rewarding them for doing good. Residents can sign up for volunteering opportunities that are advertised on the app.

Once a volunteer has completed their activity, they earn Citizen Coins. These coins can be spent on offers and discounts from local businesses. There is also the option to share coins with others.

Since its launch, Citizen Coin has made a great impact in the district. As of December 2024, there are 910 active citizens on the app, who are all making a difference in their local community. Volunteers can choose a range of local opportunities, from litter-picking to supporting local charities.

Local businesses have taken the initiative onboard. Eighty retailers have joined the app to offer rewards and discounts. By signing up to Citizen Coin, local businesses can give back to their community while promoting their services to new customers. These retailers include coffee shops, barber shops and leisure centres, plus many more.

For most people who volunteer, it isn’t just about the rewards. It’s about the joy of giving back, meeting others, and feeling part of something bigger.

Carole Archer said: "Volunteering in the Medieval Herb Garden for nearly seven years has been a joy. It gets me out in the fresh air, meeting new people, whilst doing the thing that I love – gardening.

“It's not just the staff and other gardening-volunteers who have become like a second family, it’s nice to meet all the visitors and school children with whom we get to talk, about the history of the castle and, of course, the plants in the garden.

“I like the idea of the Citizen Coin Scheme. As it’s nice to think that we are getting some recognition for the hours we spend, in all weathers.”
