Campaign to protect people on a night out

Tuesday, April 15, 2025

As we get ready for the Easter Bank Holiday, people are being reminded about the ‘Ask for Angela’ campaign which helps to keep people safe as they enjoy a night out.

Wakefield Council, as part of the Community Safety Partnership, is running the initiative in many of the district’s bars, pubs, nightclubs, and restaurants. It helps people who feel threatened or unsafe by encouraging them to approach staff and ask to speak to Angela.

Angela is a fictional member of staff and wanting to speak to her is a signal that the individual requires assistance. Anyone, regardless of their gender, is encouraged to use the phrase.

“We want people to enjoy the Bank Holiday knowing that they are safe in the places they choose to visit and socialise in the district.

“Wakefield is the safest city in West Yorkshire, but this initiative addresses the dangers a minority of people can pose to members of the public who want to be left in peace. We hope it offers people that extra bit of reassurance when enjoying a night out.”

Staff at participating venues are trained to help customers out of uncomfortable situations quickly and discreetly.

The response could be reuniting them with a friend or helping them to call a taxi to take them home.

If needed and where safe to do so, the venue may also request support from security and/or the police.
