Cabinet to approve investment into district’s roads

Wednesday, December 04, 2024

Wakefield Council is set to keep investing in the district’s roads. Over £19m will be pumped into maintaining roads, footpaths and cycleways and road safety over the next two years.

“It’s a top priority to make sure our roads are up to scratch and keep everyone moving around our district.

“Our plans to use this money as efficiently as we can are incredibly important. We want to maintain our road network to the highest possible standard and to keep all road users safe.

“So, we’re prioritising how we use this funding to make the biggest impact we can with the resources we have.”

A report to Cabinet on 10 December outlines how £19m will be spent to keep roads maintained and safe. The money will be focussed on areas most in need of work. Details of where these works will take place are set out in the programme, which Councillors will be asked to approve.

The money will also support infrastructure work. This includes maintaining traffic signals, improving highway drainage, introducing road safety improvements, and maintaining lines and signs.

Part of the funding will be used to help promote safer walking, cycling and links to public transport.

The funding comes from West Yorkshire Combined Authority through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.

Cabinet will meet on Tuesday 10 December at 10.30am to discuss the plans. The meeting can be watched live or later on the Council’s website.
