Key details

The A639 Park Road, Pontefract experiences heavy traffic especially at rush hour and on weekends. Options have been developed to handle existing and future traffic levels to allow for better overall traffic flow and more active travel.

Plans

The Council is proposing improvements between Stuart Road and Junction 32 of the M62. These are key to providing Pontefract with the infrastructure needed to support the development of the area and its surroundings.

  • More people walking and cycling to encourage healthier lifestyles.

  • Better overall flow of traffic including improved access in and out of Pontefract Park and Parkside Retail Park.

  • Reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality.

Proposals

  • Replacing the Pontefract Park roundabout with traffic light junction and new crossings for people walking and cycling.

  • Options for an additional traffic or a bus lane towards the motorway between Park Lane and the racecourse junction.

  • Options to achieve bus priority at the A639/ Park Lane/ Beechnut Lane junction.

  • Either improve the cycle path around the racecourse or create a new one to link the A639 to M62 underpass.

  • Widen the footpath between Park Lane and racecourse junction for shared use with cyclists.

  • A new two-way cycle track between Park Lane junction and Aspire leisure centre.

Funding

Funding for this road scheme has not yet been secured. West Yorkshire Combined Authority is paying for the development of a business case which will be used to apply for funding to deliver the scheme.

Policy alignment

The project aligns with national and regional plans, transport and clean air policies and strategies as well as the West Yorkshire Transport Strategy, Wakefield District Local Plan,  Wakefield District Economic Strategy 2018-2023, Wakefield Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, West Yorkshire Bus Strategy and Wakefield District Transport Strategy.
