Investing in your roads

Keeping our district moving is one of our top priorities. That’s why we’re investing over £20m into our roads over the next two years.

Cllr Matthew Morley, Cabinet Member for Planning and Highways

Councillor Matthew Morley

We work around the clock to keep your roads and footpaths safe and well maintained. Here are just some of the things we did last month:

May 2025

Bretton

We installed a new waterproof pedestrian surface the full length of Maltkiln Drive, Cobbler Hall, and The Croft

These new surfaces will provide a safer, durable, long-lasting covering for these footways.

Castleford

We’ve been busy in Castleford this month. From closing roads and diverting traffic, allowing the popular Roman Festival to take place, to carrying out work either side of the level crossing on High Street. We also created a new waterproof pedestrian surface the full length of Temple Street.

Festivals and outdoor charity events always draw crowds of people. To ensure the safety of all those attending, our teams are out all hours closing roads and putting temporary diversions in place. So, everyone gets to enjoy the events.
We made Temple Street safer by applying a new safer, durable, long-lasting covering to the footway.

Featherstone

We’ve been renewing the tarmac and replacing white lines along the edge of the railway lines along Station Lane.

The safety of our roads is our main priority. Replacing worn out surfaces and reinstating road markings, so they are clearly visible, helps make our roads safer for everyone using them.

Hemsworth

A lot of work has taken place this month on the Hemsworth Bypass. From Beamshaw roundabout to Minsthorpe Lane roundabout. We have been putting a new waterproof pedestrian surface down. We’ve also resurfaced Station Road from Lowfield Road to Royd Moor Lane.

By maintaining our roads and keeping surfaces sealed and in good condition it reduces the number of potholes and other damaged caused by wear and tear. This reduces the need to carry out major repairs, keeping motorists motoring!

Kinsley

We sent our team out to tackle some issues with drain covers that had been reported to us on Hoyle Mill Rd and Wakefield Rd. They also carried out repairs to kerbing, the footpath and road on Tombridge Crescent.

It is important that drain covers and grids are installed correctly. Damaged and missing covers can be extremely dangerous, especially in the dark.  By keeping on top of minor repairs and looking after our roads, it reduces the need for costly major work that would be necessary if they weren’t properly maintained.

Knottingley

Install We’ve installed a new footpath near the junction of Sycamore Close. It ends opposite the back of 123 Yew Tree Walk

Before improvement work was carried out this footpath became muddy and hazardous, especially in wet weather and during the winter. The new surface will make it safer and more durable all year round.

New Millerdam

We installed a new waterproof pedestrian surface the full length of Lake View

This new surface will provide a safer, durable, long-lasting covering for this footway.

Nostell

You may have seen our team out on Doncaster Road this month as they made repairs to several of the streetlights there.

Keeping you safe after dark is important to us. Brightly lit streets are safer for motorists and pedestrians.

Notton

We’ve been working hard in Notton this month installing a new high friction surface on Bleakley Lane and Chevet Lane.

Different roads require different surfaces depending on the type of use they get. These lanes needed a high friction surface, so we sent our team out to get the job done!

Overton

We installed a new waterproof pedestrian surface the full length of Wood Mount.

This new surface will provide a safer, durable, long-lasting covering for this footway.

Pontefract

We’ve been extremely busy improving the footways in Pontefract this month. We installed new waterproof surfacing the full length of:

  • East Avenue
  • South Avenue
  • North Avenue
  • West Avenue
  • Harewood Avenue
  • Harewood Mount
  • Grove Rise
  • Hillside Mount

These new surfaces will provide a safer, durable, long-lasting covering for these footways.

South Elmsall

We replaced the traffic camera road markings on Minsthorpe Lane.

By ensuring everyone keeps to the speed limit, we can help reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities on our roads.

South Kirkby

Several footways in the area have been upgraded this month, with new waterproof pedestrian surfaces installed. These include:

  • Convent Avenue
  • Flavell Close
  • Green Lane

These new surfaces will provide a safer, durable, long-lasting covering for these footways.

Wakefield

Lots of work has taken place in Wakefield this month. We have installed a new tarmac footpath on Finch Avenue. Replaced a sunken gulley on Weavers Chase. And carried out upgrades to several footways in the area by installing new waterproof surfaces. These include:

  • Vernon Place
  • Stillwell Drive
  • Wharncliffe Road

By keeping on top of minor repairs and looking after our roads and footways, it reduces the need for costly major work that would be necessary if they weren’t properly maintained.

Walton

We installed a new vehicle crossing at The Grove in Walton.

Clearly marked vehicle crossings make our roads safer for everyone who uses them. By installing new visible crossings, we can help reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities on our roads.

Thank you

To carry out this work, we must sometimes close roads and put temporary diversions in place. We always try to keep disruption to a minimum and carry out work as quickly as we can, without compromising on quality.

Thank you for bearing with us while we continue to improve your roads.

The table above shows just some of the work we’ve been doing. A detailed programme of work carried out across the district is also available.
