Kirkgate Innovative Neighbourhood Gateway (KING)
Key details
The demolition of redundant buildings is to make space for new housing and public spaces.
This project is unlocking a key gateway site. It will bring forward new housing. And encourage more people into the city centre. Some of the existing commercial units are being retained. As part of the proposed residential development. This will help make Kirkgate a vibrant place to live, work and play.
Plans
The plans are to:
- buy and demolish old commercial properties on the site
- deliver façade improvements to the Harewood Arms - and other business premises that will remain on site
- encourage the delivery of attractive modern housing units - and associated road and footpaths as well as new public spaces
Benefits
The benefits include:
- new and improved residential, commercial and community spaces
- creation of new long-term jobs in the city
- more city centre footfall and spending in local shops and restaurants
- make Kirkgate a safer gateway into the city
Progress
2024 -25 – Purchase of old commercial properties for demolition complete
October 2025 – Demolition of old commercial properties begins
Spring 2026 – Demolition complete
