Local development scheme and local plan progress

We are currently preparing a new statutory development plan for the district. This is called the Wakefield District Local Plan 2036.

The Local Development Scheme document provides summary information on this. It also sets out the council's timetable for producing the Local Plan.

Local Plan progress

Here we will provide up-to-date information about our progress in preparing the Local Plan

The Wakefield District Local Plan 2036 was submitted in May 2021. It went to the Secretary of State, for independent examination. Adoption is expected in late 2023 or early 2024.

Previous Local Plan consultation stages:

• publication draft – October to December 2020
• initial draft plan – January to February 2019
• early engagement and call for sites – October to December 2017

Current statutory development plan documents (also known as the Local Development Framework):

Core Strategy development plan

The document was adopted by the Council on 15 April 2009. It was delivered in accordance with the LDS 2007. The receipt of the inspector's report was delayed by a month, due to more hearings being held in December 2008.

These hearings were held to enable all parties to prepare and present further evidence. This was requested by the Inspector. The estimated date for adoption of the document by the Council was 31 March 2009. Download the Core Strategy development plan 

Development Policies development plan

The document was adopted by the Council on 15 April 2009. It was delivered in accordance with the LDS 2007. This was ahead of the estimated date for adoption which was 30 April 2009. Download the Development Policies development plan.

Site specific policies local plan

The document was adopted by the Council on 12 September 2012. Early stages of the document were delivered in accordance with the LDS 2007. Download the site specific policies local plan.

Central Wakefield Area Action Plan Development Plan Document

The document was adopted by the Council on 17 June 2009. It was delivered in accordance with the LDS 2007. This was three months ahead of the estimated adoption date of September 2009.

Waste Development Plan Document

The document was adopted by the Council on 9 December 2009. It was delivered in accordance with the LDS 2007. This was five months ahead of the estimated adoption date of May 2010.

Retail and Town Centre Local Plan

The Local Plan was adopted on 18 January 2017.

Leisure, Recreation and Open Space Local Plan

The Local Plan was adopted on 18 January 2017.

Made neighbourhood plan

The Walton neighbourhood plan was made and adopted by the council on 13 April 2016. It forms part of the districts statutory development plan. Download the Walton neighbourhood plan

Local development documents

Community Infrastructure Levy Approval

The Community Infrastructure Levy Charging Schedule was approved by the Council on 20 January 2016. The charges were implemented on 1 April 2016.

Supplementary Planning Documents adopted in the district:
