Severe weather
Severe weather is one of the main causes of disruption in West Yorkshire. Cold and snow, strong winds, storms, very hot weather, and heatwaves can damage roads, buildings, and businesses.
Severe weather can lead to:
- travel disruption due to road closures and public transport delays
- schools, public buildings and workplaces may close
- water pipes bursting or power cuts
- damage to homes and buildings, leading to evacuation
- businesses and services being disrupted causing them to stop or close
- health problems and danger to life due to very hot or very cold weather
What can you do?
- check on family and neighbours who might need help
- wear the right clothes for the weather if you go outside
- listen to local news and watch for weather warnings
- don’t travel if you are told not to. If you must travel, plan ahead. Take warm clothes, food, and water. Tell someone where you are going and when you will arrive
- if you own a business, make sure your business continuity plans are up to date
- follow advice from trusted sources like the Met Office and our Winter Weather and flooding web pages
The Met Office National Severe Weather Warning Service (NSWWS) gives warnings about severe weather and what might happen. The Met Office also has a Weather Ready campaign with tips to keep you safe and healthy. You can sign up for Met Office alerts.
