Our adult social care services
Are you interested in a career in adult social care at Wakefield Council?
Depending on the role you choose, we have a variety of different services that you could work in.
Reablement services
Reablement is a short and intensive service for people with disabilities and those recovering from an illness or injury. It's usually delivered in the person's own home.
The service aims to work with individuals to:
- encourage and motivate them to rebuild confidence
- support the development of their daily living skills
- promote and enable them to retain as much independence as possible
Our reablement service covers the whole of the Wakefield District. It is co-ordinated from Waterton House in Lupset and Hazel Garth in Knottingley.
Day opportunities
Our day opportunities service helps adults with learning difficulties and / or autism to take part in various activities.
Activities include:
- swimming
- adapted cycling
- healthy walk
- arts and crafts
- trips to places of interest or education
It is community-based across the district.
Supported Living
Our supported living service provides support to people with a range of learning disabilities and complex needs who live in their own or shared homes across the Wakefield district.
The support is tailored to meet all the needs of the individual. Some may need help for a few hours each day, whilst others may need 24-hour support. And there’s an on-call system to cover all emergencies and eventualities.
Our support workers help them live independently. Assisting them with daily tasks such as personal care, shopping, cooking, cleaning and paying bills. As well as enabling them to develop friendships, enjoy social and leisure activities and work.
Peripatetic Services
Our peripatetic service provides care and support to people living in specialist ‘extra care’ housing. Residents live in their own self-contained apartments within a shared building or site. There are communal spaces and on-site facilities such as hairdressers and shops.
The accommodation is fully accessible and dementia-friendly. And there is usually an on-site team available around the clock to meet care and support needs. It means that the residents can remain independent in their own home for as long as possible.
We have two locations in the district: Sherwood Court in Kettlethorpe and De Lacy Gardens in Pontefract.
Residential Care Homes
Our residential care service looks after adults who are unable to live at home because of physical or learning disabilities.
We have three care homes in the Wakefield district which provide accommodation, meals, leisure activities, personal care and emotional support.
Dovecote Lodge in Horbury
Dovecote Lodge specialises in providing short-term accommodation and rehabilitation therapy for adults who have been discharged from hospital. It also offers support to prevent people having to be admitted to hospital unnecessarily.
Flanshaw Lodge in Alverthorpe
Flanshaw Lodge provides long-term care for older people living with dementia. It also offers short-term placements for adults who have been discharged from hospital and are waiting for their care and support package to be finalised.
Hazel Garth in Knottingley
Hazel Garth primarily looks after adults over 65 years of age living with dementia.
Our adult social work teams
Our social work service helps vulnerable adults to navigate life’s challenges and achieve better outcomes. It supports them to ensure their needs are met and their voices are heard. And provides them with the means to live independently.
