Improving Health and Wellbeing Together

A new plan to improve the health and wellbeing of residents across the Wakefield District has been published.

The Wakefield District Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2022-2025 aims to improve the mental and physical health of all residents in the Wakefield district, regardless of their background or stage of life.

The plan describes how organisations, including Wakefield Council, will work together with local communities to improve the health of the population overall. This includes closing the gap between the health of people in the most well-off areas of the district and people who live in poorer areas.

To reach these long-term ambitions for Wakefield, the new strategy identifies four key overarching priority areas:

  • a healthy standard of living for all
  • a healthy start in life for every child
  • preventing ill-health
  • sustainable communities

The priorities in the plan are based on extensive research and input from local communities and business leaders. This is compiled in the district's Joint Needs Health Assessment.

Local government and other supporting reports can also be found here.

The focus is on providing people with more choice, control, and support to live independently. All while improving the coordination of health and care services based on individual needs.

Key areas of focus include:

  • affordable housing
  • support for pregnant women to quit smoking
  • improved access to mental health support for new mothers
  • enhanced help for informal carers
  • creating safer and healthier living spaces with more green areas in City and town centres
