Low Ackworth flood risk reduction scheme
We’re working with residents and landowners to reduce the risk of flooding in Low Ackworth.
Works have begun. to improve water flow, prevent blockages and improve the capacity of culverts.
What has happened before
Over the last few years, we have looked into what causes flooding in Low Ackworth. This work has helped us understand what we can do to help prevent this from happening again.
We found that most flooding happens because rain runs off open land. Heavy rain falls on land that is already soaked, and the drainage system cannot cope with the extra water.
We also learned that some flooding is caused by culverts that are too small. Poor upkeep of culverts and watercourses on private land also adds to the problem.
Planned works
Our flood risk team have a phased plan to reduce the risk of flooding in Low Ackworth.
After phase one is complete, we will need to work with local landowners. They own some of the watercourses and culverts in the area causing the flooding. By working together, we can see where maintenance or upgrades are needed. We will also use hydraulic modelling to help us choose the best options based on risk and cost. Future work will depend on the Government providing grant funding.
The first phase aims to reduce flooding by helping the water to drain away through the ditches and culverts already in place. To do this, we need to maintain the downstream ditches and replace any culverts that are too small. This work will take place over the next year. Once it is finished, the team will look at what steps are needed for phase two.
Grant funding
If you experience flooding, please report it to our customer service team. This helps our flood team understand the level of flood risk in the area. They also use this information as evidence when applying for Government funding for the work that is needed.
In 2025/26, local councillors for Ackworth approved a £20,000 grant to support phase one of this project. Our project officers have been working closely with them to identify problems and support residents.
