Local Government Act 2000

The Local Authorities (Referendums) (Petitions) (England) Regulations 2011

Electors can petition the council to hold a referendum on whether a local authority should change to a different form of governance. A petition must be signed by at least 5 per cent of the local government electors for the district.

For Wakefield, 5 per cent is 13,386 local government electors, as of February 2026.

This figure will have effect for petitions presented from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
