What the health and safety team do

The health and safety team respond to various enquiries and incident notifications including:

  • requests for advice
    • this can be from businesses, safety representatives, and employees
  • business support officers offer free and impartial health and safety advice
  • accident, ill health, and incident reports
  • complaints
  • statutory Notifications
    • this can be lifting and pressure equipment reports, asbestos removal, or cooling towers
  • certain licence applications e.g., tattooing, ear piercing, and electrolysis

Our team follows Government guidance and uses risk-based criteria to select incidents and handle complaints. This approach considers factors like risk level and severity. Depending on the situation, our response may vary from no immediate action to a phone call, letter, investigation, or inspection.

Typical subjects of complaint include:

  • poor workplace conditions
  • unsafe equipment or working practices
  • welfare issues e.g., provision of restrooms, toilet facilities, working time
  • workplace temperatures
  • smoking in the workplace
  • Sunday Trading Laws

We treat the identity of complainants as confidential and do not disclose it to employers. However, we may request contact details to gather relevant information and provide feedback after an investigation.
