About your Councillors
Wakefield Council is made up of 63 elected councillors. Each representing one of the district’s 21 wards.
Councillors work on your behalf to make decisions about:
- local services
- investment
- planning
- long term priorities for the district
What your Councillors do
Your Councillors:
- represent your views in council decision making
- help resolve local issues and concerns
- work with partners and community organisations
- support improvements to services, facilities and neighbourhoods
- influence long term plans for Wakefield
Councillors make sure that local priorities and residents’ voices are reflected in the work of the Council.
Councillors work to represent their community's needs.
This involves:
- attending meetings
- holding surgeries
- campaigning on local issues
They are entitled to allowances and expenses to cover costs but do not receive a salary.
Councillors must follow the Council's Code of Conduct. This requires them to register their financial and other interests.
The current Council
The current Council is made up of the following Political Groups:
- Labour Group: 50 Councillors
- Unity Group: 4 independent Councillors
- Liberal Democrats: 2 Councillors
- Conservative and Independent Group: 2 Councillors (Conservative and 1 independent)
And 5 ungrouped Councillors including 2 Reform Councillors and 3 independent Councillors.
