Wakefield Council urges residents to seek support as energy bills rise

Wakefield Council is reminding residents that help is available with energy costs this autumn, as household bills are set to increase.
Energy bills are expected to reach their highest level in three years when the regulator’s price cap increases on 1 October. It is estimated that a typical household on a variable tariff for both gas and electricity will pay around £60 more per year.
“The rise in energy bills will be a real concern for many of our residents. Especially as colder weather approaches and people spend more time indoors.
“I’d encourage anyone who is worried about paying their energy bills to contact us for advice and support. We can help residents understand what assistance is available and whether they are eligible for any of our schemes.”

Residents who are finding it difficult to keep up with their energy bills may be eligible for support through the Council's Energy Debt Fund. The Fund provides grants to help people clear problem energy debts and can also contribute towards future bills.
The Fuel Poverty Fund is available to low-income owner-occupiers who are struggling to pay for essential heating improvements and whose health may be affected by living in a cold home. If their current heating system is condemned, broken or they have difficulty operating it due to illness or disability, they may be eligible for a free replacement. All the work is arranged through the Council's approved contractor and is fully funded.
For more general financial assistance, the Council also has a free service called Money Smart. Available to all residents across the district, it offers tailored support to help people manage their finances and maximise their income. The service includes advice on budgeting, debt, mortgage difficulties and other money-related concerns.
