Thornes Park Stadium set for improvements

Monday, March 16, 2026

Thornes Park Stadium is the next Wakefield Council leisure centre to benefit from a £1m upgrade.

The gym is being expanded, bringing in new equipment and dedicated HYROX areas. There will also be an improved village-style changing room and new spaces for additional classes and groups to use.

“I’m pleased to see work get underway to upgrade the facilities at Thornes Park Stadium. The improvements are set to make a real difference to the site and improve the facilities on offer.

“It’s also exciting that we’re able to bring HYROX events to the centre. It is hugely popular and being able to offer this style of training will really put Thornes Park stadium on the map.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product.”

HYROX is a global indoor fitness race designed for all. All races follow the same format and see running combined with functional workout stations. Having a dedicated space to support HYROX style training, and HYROX group exercise classes on the timetable, will bring new visitors to the stadium. With plans for the stadium to host its own HYROX events starting later this year.

Other improvements to the leisure centre include a new welcoming reception area and re-decoration and improvements throughout the corridors.

The latest work follows the newly upgraded all-weather outside running track and Athletics Village. Which includes a hammer cage, shot put, long jump, high jump, pole vault, steeplechase with water jump, and state-of-the-art LED floodlighting for evening and winter training.

The work is expected to begin later this year. There will be some minor disruption to those using the centre but this will be communicated in advance.
