Temporary Extension of Licensing Hours for England World Cup Match

Friday, July 03, 2026

Pubs, bars and hospitality venues across the district will be able to stay open until 5am on 6 July 2026 following a temporary relaxation of licensing hours announced by the Government.

Cllr Rebecca Webster, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Safer Stronger Communities, said: "This temporary extension of licensing hours is great news for our local pubs, bars and hospitality businesses, giving them the opportunity to support football fans while benefiting from the additional trade that major sporting events can bring.

"We hope local businesses and football fans across our district make the most of this opportunity to get behind the Three Lions and enjoy the occasion. We encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly and respect the extended licensing arrangements, helping to ensure people remain safe and that celebrations stay positive for everyone involved."

Emergency legislation introduced under Section 172 of the Licensing Act 2003 will allow eligible licensed premises to remain open during the extended period without the need to apply for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN).

The extension has been introduced to support fans watching England's World Cup fixture against Mexico and provides an opportunity for local venues to welcome customers during what is expected to be a significant national sporting occasion.

No action is required to benefit from the temporary extension, as it will apply automatically to eligible licensed premises under the emergency legislation.
