Taking pride in our communities by tackling flytipping

Tuesday, October 20, 2026

Wakefield Council is tackling dumped waste this Flytipping Fortnight and all year-around.

Twenty fixed penalties notices and eight cautions have already been issued since April. As well as a number of cases awaiting court hearings for potential prosecutions. With dozens more investigations still being carried out.

“Flytipping Fortnight is a chance to shine a light on work by our teams to tackle the issue. There is no excuse for leaving bags of rubbish or large items on side streets, highways, open land or on the pavement outside your home.

“We want to encourage pride in our district, and flytipping undermines that.

“Our cleansing teams do a fantastic job keeping our neighbourhoods clean. When waste is illegally dumped, they are taken away from other important work to clear it.

“Every clearance takes time and resources including staff, equipment and money.”

Cllr Julian Carter

Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services

Cllr Julian Carter

The Council’s enforcement officers investigate flytipping reports and work to identify those responsible. They take appropriate action against them. This includes fines, prosecutions, and vehicle seizures. The Council also works alongside the police on joint operations to tackle suspected waste offences.

“Flytipping is unacceptable, and we are committed to taking action against those responsible. We will continue to work with our partners to target hotspots and hold offenders to account.

“Together we can reduce flytipping in our district and protect our communities. Making it a place people are proud to live in.
