Stay safe, stay out of the water

Monday, June 22, 2026

‘Stay safe, stay out of the water’ is Wakefield Council’s message ahead of the heat wave this week.

With The Met Office issuing an ‘Amber Warning for Extreme Heat’, the Council is warning people of the dangers of entering open water such as lakes, reservoirs and rivers.

Cllr Rebecca Webster, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Safer Stronger Communities, said: “Our message is simple. Stay safe, stay out of the water.

“There are no safe open water spots in our district. Anyone entering open water is at a real risk of being trapped by hidden dangers underneath or going into cold water shock.

“If you see someone in trouble, do not go in after them. Call 999 immediately, tell them to float on their back and, if possible, throw in something that can help them to stay afloat.”

Swimming in open water is extremely dangerous. Previous hot weather has seen people risking, and sadly losing, their lives by swimming in open water. Despite signs warning them not to.

If anyone is in danger in the water:

  • Phone 999 immediately
  • Tell them to float on their back
  • Throw something in to help them stay afloat.

Please also remember that lighting fires or bringing any kind of BBQ equipment, including single use BBQ trays, to parks or green spaces is not allowed. And please use the bins provided or take any litter or rubbish home.

Cllr Webster added: “We’ve got so many beautiful places on our doorstop to enjoy the hot weather. So, let’s do so safely.”
