Spooktacular fun is coming to a town near you this half-term

Wednesday, October 07, 2026

This October half-term, Wakefield District Markets are inviting families to enjoy a week of free Halloween fun across the district.

Our markets are at the heart of our communities. Events like these are a great way to bring families together, create lasting memories and encourage people to spend time in our town centres. The pumpkin trail is always a great success.

The events are completely free and a fantastic opportunity to support local traders while having fun this half-term.

Castleford will once again play host to the popular Halloween Spooktacular, returning from 24 to 31 October with an even bigger pumpkin trail and a packed programme of family-friendly activities. Visitors can look forward to a haunted house, live DJ, pumpkin decorating, face painting, street performers, and a visit from the Halloween-themed Arriva bus, where families can find out more about free travel for children. These events are funded through Pride in Place.

Thanks to funding provided by the Pride in Place Programme, we’re delighted to be expanding this fantastic Halloween event in Castleford. Events like this play an important role in attracting visitors from across the region. It's a great example of how targeted investment can strengthen our communities, support local enterprise and create town centres that people want to visit and enjoy.

Families and friends of all ages will be able to enjoy a packed programme of free activities, entertainment and spooky fun right in the heart of the town centre.

It's a great opportunity to get out, have some fun and support our local businesses. I’d encourage everyone to come along and discover everything Castleford has to offer.

Markets across the district will be hosting their own pumpkin trails, giving families the chance to explore their local town centres while taking part in the seasonal fun. Children can pick up a free trail map and hunt for hidden pumpkins at markets in Wakefield, Pontefract, Ossett and South Elmsall. All pumpkin trails will take place on 31 October, except for Ossett, where the trail will be held on 30 October.

Market traders will be joining in the Halloween spirit with themed displays and seasonal. Families are encouraged to dress up, take photos, and enjoy the atmosphere.
