Share your views on the renewal of Wakefield’s city centre Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO)

Wakefield Council is considering renewing the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) that is currently in place in the city centre.
It was first introduced in 2017, then renewed in April 2020 and April 2023. It is due to expire again in April 2026.
PSPOs allow Councils to restrict activities in public spaces that negatively impact the quality of life for the local community. They are designed to address persistent anti-social behaviour and nuisance issues in specific areas by imposing conditions or prohibitions on the use of that space.
Wakefield’s current PSPO was introduced to help deal with issues such as drinking, drug use and people urinating in public places. Anyone failing to comply with the PSPO can receive a fixed penalty notice of up to £100 or a fine of up to £1,000.
The Council is proposing to:
- renew the PSPO for another three years
- introduce new rules to deal with a wider range of anti-social behaviours
- expand the PSPO area to include the retail parks on Ings Road and Charlesworth Way
