Share your feedback on design of new mural for Ossett

Wednesday, September 10, 2025

We’re asking for your views on the proposed design of a brand-new public artwork for Ossett.

The mural, designed by West Yorkshire based artist Shiraaz Ali, celebrates the town’s iconic landmarks, symbols and patterns that make it so unique. The mural is to be installed on the side of Richmonds Butchers in Ossett on the Market Square and will be seen from Dale Street.

“The mural will be a celebration of everything Ossett has to offer and its local community. From its famous weekly markets. To its commemoration of VE Day paying respect to our veterans. And to the local wildlife such as the Peregrine Falcon.

“It will welcome locals and visitors alike to the town. I would encourage everyone in Ossett to come and have a look at the design that’s been created and share your thoughts on it with us.”

Shiraaz has already engaged with residents and young people through Ossett Academy, the market, the library, Visit Ossett, Ossett Civic Society and Ossett Through the Ages. As well as local councillors and Wakefield Council Conservation Officers.

The mural depicts Ossett’s characterful, colourful markets and architectural forms making its mark across the Yorkshire skyline. The archway windows are inspired by the stained-glass windows found in the Town Hall and pay homage to the heritage and craftsmanship found in Ossett.

The designs for the mural will go in display in Ossett Library during standard opening hours from Saturday 13 to Saturday 20 September and are available to view at Trinity Church during their Heritage Open Day on Saturday 13 September 10am-4pm. People are asked to share feedback on the postcards provided.

Public comments on the final design will be considered by the artist in preparation for a planning application being submitted later in the year.

This mural project is part of the legacy of Our Year - Wakefield District 2024 kindly supported with investment from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Arts Council England.
