Readying local businesses for Martyn's Law

Monday, September 29, 2025

Wakefield Council is readying businesses for the implementation of Martyn’s Law, also known as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025.

In partnership with Counter Terrorism Police North East, the Council held a free conference to provide organisations with guidance around new legal responsibilities coming into force.

The conference attracted 150 delegates, including business owners responsible for managing public spaces which frequently host more than 200 people at once.

Councillor Daniel Wilton, Cabinet Member for Communities, opened the agenda, which included practical workshops and a live case study from the London Bridge Attack.

“Wakefield is home to shopping centres, historic theatres, sports venues, and vibrant community spaces. These are places where people gather to celebrate, learn, and connect. But they are also places that must be protected.

I’m pleased we’ve been able to partner with Counter Terrorism Police North East to put on this event. Ultimately, Martyn’s Law is about saving lives. And every step you take - every drill, every plan, every conversation - brings us closer to a safer, more resilient community.”
