Public Space Protection Order to tackle car cruising now in force
Monday, December 01, 2025
A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to help tackle anti-social behaviour across the district is now in force.
The legal order gives Wakefield Council and West Yorkshire Police additional powers to tackle the nuisance and anti-social use of motor vehicles and their associated activities within the Wakefield district.
“Our district has been plagued by recent ‘car cruises’ where many organised meetings have occurred in various locations. They have attracted a substantial number of vehicles that have caused significant disruption to businesses and the public and placed significant pressure on Police resources.
“It is not only dangerous but has a detrimental effect on the quality of life and safety of those who live and work in our area. Everyone should feel safe in their local community. That’s why we’re working hard with local partners to tackle anti-social behaviour.
“This new PSPO gives us additional powers to clamp down on car cruising, targeting not only participants in the vehicles, but spectators and those who organise such events. We need to send out a clear message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.”
Cllr Daniel Wilton
Cabinet Member for Communities
In a recent public consultation, over 75 percent of those who responded supported the implementation of the Order.
West Yorkshire Police have also supported the introduction of the three-year PSPO.
In 2024-25, the Council successfully applied for 32 criminal behaviour orders. Had four Public Spaces Protection Orders in place. And issued 164 fixed penalty notices for anti-social and nuisance behaviour.
The Council are also reviewing the powers available to tackle aggressive begging, substance misuse, and anti-social gatherings. Getting more enforcement officers onto the streets so that people feel safer. And will use the full extent of the law when needed.
