Pontefract Castle’s Medieval Herb Garden volunteers complete a year’s worth of blogs

Tuesday, January 06, 2026

At the start of 2025, Pontefract Castle's dedicated team of volunteer gardeners launched a weekly blog.

They have been sharing what they have been up to in the Medieval Herb Garden (MHG) each week. They have also highlighted a 'Plant of the Week'. The blogs explain the plant of choice's growth patterns, growing conditions and medieval uses. There are also photos of the various multilegged visitors to the MHG!

Our incredible volunteers have now cultivated over 160 different varieties of plants in the MHG. You can see them for yourself on a visit to Pontefract Castle, or even get involved as a volunteer.

And they’re not stopping there! Look out for more blogs in 2026.
