Old Westgate Station car park to temporarily close

Monday, October 26, 2026

Plans for a new hotel in Wakefield city centre are taking another step forward, with essential ground surveys due to begin at the old Westgate Station car park.

The car park will temporarily close from 2 to 23 November to carry out surveys to prepare the site for future development.

“It's encouraging to see we’re making real progress on this project now.

“To allow these surveys to take place safely, we'll need to temporarily close the car park for a short time. We know this may cause some inconvenience, but plenty of parking is still available across the city centre.

“We plan to reopen the car park as soon as the work is complete. And keep it open for as long as possible before building the new hotel begins.”

In March, ION Developments was confirmed as the development partner that will deliver a brand-new, purpose-built hotel on the site, bringing new investment, visitors and opportunities to the city centre.

Delivery of a mid-range hotel in the city centre is expected to boost tourism and contribute to our growing visitor economy. And the provision of at least 110 rooms near the East Coast Main Line - with short journey times to Leeds - is also expected to attract business stays to Wakefield.

The survey work is expected to take around three weeks to complete. Once finished, the car park will reopen for public use until building work begins in 2027.

The surveys will provide important information about ground conditions and help ensure the development progresses smoothly as plans move forward.
