Wakefield Council has unveiled a new mural in Ossett on the side of local landmark Richmond’s Butchers, opposite the Town Hall.

“This mural celebrates Ossett’s distinctive heritage. From its colourful markets and stained-glass windows found in the Town Hall, to local wildlife like the peregrine falcon that visits Trinity Church’s spire.

“It is a piece of artwork which will be appreciated for years to come.”

The mural has been created by West Yorkshire based artist, Shiraaz Ali.

Shiraaz has engaged with over four hundred local residents on the design of the mural including public drop-in engagement sessions and public consultation exhibitions at Trinity Church and Ossett Library.

Shiraaz also led an introductory talk and presentation to eight groups at Ossett Academy, ensuring residents of all age groups got a chance to have their say.

Artist, Shiraaz Ali, said: “’Welcome to Ossett‘ honours the history, festivities and patriotism of the town whilst celebrating its bright future. My role as the artist was to take inspiration from the people of Ossett to create a warm welcome into the town, make people feel proud of their home and bring smiles to daily life.”

The artwork has been installed on the side of Richmond’s Butchers, established in Ossett in 1945 and located opposite Ossett Town Hall. The mural has been digitally printed onto aluminium composite panels and fabricated by Style – Signage, Graphics & Display of Ossett, which has over 40 years’ experience. The three-part piece replicates the shape of the windows found in Ossett Town Hall and features many of the landmarks of Ossett including Coal Carrying and the war memorial.

Mr Richmond, Owner of Richmond’s Butchers, said: “We’re delighted our long-standing local business could be the site for this artwork, to help tell the story of our community and bring colour and pride to the local area."

The mural is part of the legacy of Our Year - Wakefield District 2024, and forms part of the ‘Crossings and Gateways’ programme. It has been kindly supported with investment from Arts Council England and West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
